scene report: anime cons

why do i keep going to these things?


increasingly it feels like every time i go someplace that’s purportedly a celebration of something i enjoy, inevitably it ends up being a grotesque mockery that makes me despair for the state of culture in this nation. The Devil Has Won This World, We Are Living In Hell. truly there is nobody in Society more oppressed than aesthetesexcept perhaps Gamersor Smokers, the whole world is set up to offend and disgust you, as if the philistines gloating over their victory have set it all up to torture them specifically.

as someone with singular and exquisite taste in anime, that is my experience at the average anime con. i’m almost totally disconnected from the majority of the current anime fanbase, out of the top twenty most popular anime to have come out in the past five years, i don’t think i’ve seen even a single onei thought made in abyss might count but i looked it up and that came out eight years ago now, good lord. i think the only anime series i’ve seen that came out within the past year is puniru wa kawaii slime, and the only upcoming series i plan on watching is the second season of puniru wa kawaii slimeok and also the 4th season of iruma and whatever the new gochiusa animation project ends up being. aren't they making a new madoka movie too?. i’ve ascended far beyond, i have no need for subtitles anymore, i only watch old and obscure shows, shows for children, shows only popular in japan, hidden masterpieces misunderstood and hated by viewers when they first came out. maybe 8-10 years ago i could have blended in better, i was more in touch with shows popular at the time (they were also better), though back then i was vigilant in concealing my power level and my ability to tolerate certain types of cringe wasn’t well developed at the time so if i’d actually gone to any event i might have fainted on the spot. truly it’s a curse... if only i could live in blissful tasteless ignorance enjoying trash like shonenslop, isekai garbage, like everybody else... alas!

anyways, for somebody completely out of touch there’s obviously not a lot to enjoy because approximately 80% of everything is dedicated to the top five trendiest franchises: merch sold by vendors, art sold in artist alley, panels, cosplays. “popular things are popular”, huge surprise. but when i think about it, i think my problems go even deeper than that, even if the whole convention was based around my favorite shows, i think a fundamental issue might be that i just don’t enjoy most of the typical con activities. for instance:

arcade
if a con has an arcade that's where i’ll spend about 90% of my time playing rhythm games, this is the main reason i’m willing to indulge my friends when they ask me to go with them to one. the appeal for me is that con arcades usually have older versions and rare games, though recently arcades have been stepping up their game, there’s not that many “con-exclusive” arcade cabs left, plus at the arcade usually you don't have to wait in lines to play most games. i also have both a pop’n music controller and the ps2 version of para para paradise so going to a con is no longer the only place i can play those games. honestly, most rare games are rare for a reason too, they’re not that great. i love ez2ac but that game is a hot mess with the footpedal and wacky button layouts, it's legitimately impossible and i don’t think i’ve ever cleared a single chart.
vendors
the largest part of any con is always vendors/artist alley... which is literally just shopping? it’s a huge draw too, in fact i’m pretty sure there’s a significant proportion of attendees who show up only to shop, basically paying a costly admission fee to shop at an anime-themed bazaar. might be nice if the merch selection wasn't miserable, lots of crappy stuff made specifically for the american market, there’s plenty of good anime merch out there but it’s available only in japan and of course nobody bothers to import any of it. i guess if you look hard enough there’s some neat stuff but i’m a little bit worried that every hobby or subculture is ultimately turning into just buying stuff, or getting flooded with grifters trying to make a quick buck. i have to admit i used to be pretty bad about this, when i first went to the pokemon center in japan i bought a bunch of plushies of pokemon i didn’t really even like just because i felt like i had to buy a bunch of stuff. nowadays i try to be discerning, doing a kind of kondo thing where i only try to get stuff that genuinely “sparks joy” (victini plushes exclusively), more often than not i walk out of stores without buying anything. i also spent hours crawling around every inch of akiba or Nakano broadway or den den town looking for good deals on rare nendoroids, it was pretty fun at the time and i discovered some neat places but looking back on it i cringe when i think about all the other stuff i could’ve been doing with my time in japan. i only buy like one nendoroid a year now and it’s got to me something really irresistible, like the forthcoming puniru nendoroid.
panels
i have a fairly low tolerance for certain types of cringe so i’ve never been able to make it through an entire fan panel, i rarely go to panels in the first place and if i do it’s either one by japanese studio staff, university professor giving the equivalent of a lecture on some topic, or that one time there was an 18+ shibari demonstration where an aging hippie tied up his much younger asian “partner”. i should start hosting a panel where i get profusely drunk and berate the audience for 40 minutes for their lack of culture, or hold forth on one of my pet topics.
tcg and stuff
one thing my friends do a lot at cons is play trading card games or mahjong. i hate trading card games so that’s out of the question, but i’ve been considering learning mahjong lately. the thing is, why does it have to be at a con, can’t you just buy some tiles and play mahjong with your friends at home? plus, at home you can also drink and smoke and bet money on it...
guests
the “celebrity” guests do not interest me at all, it's always people i’ve never heard of, instagram cosplayers or the biggest (and worst) category of all, dub voice actors. i assume the only reason anyone watches dubs is because they’re illiterate and cannot read subtitles, otherwise why put yourself through that? anime dub voice actors are all awful, the difference between them and professional japanese seiyuu is night and day. also there’s so few people willing to stoop that low that the whole “industry” seems to be like five people who have to voice every character between themselves, their bios in the guidebook listing roles are as excessive as soviet generals were with medals and decorations. but leaving that aside, i don’t get why people care so much about meeting them anyway, i would much rather meet the writers, directors, or mangakabest i've done so far is one time i had the good fortune of going to a panel where gen urobuchi randomly showed up, he wasn’t even supposed to be there and swung by because he was in town, unfortunately i didn’t have a single thing on me he could possibly sign, they’re the ones responsible for everything of substance in a work, voice actors are just their tools, puppets carrying out their vision. i suppose it could be part of the character obsession, it’s pretty much the closest you can get to actually “meeting” a character, having somebody who can sign character goods. also usually actors are far more outgoing and thus willing to appear in public so it's probably easy to get them out, i know mangaka in particular are especially reclusive, it’s quite common for them to use pen names and never appear in any pictures or at any events. of course the main issue for all potential japanese guests is distance, it's tough to lure them across the sea to random american events...
cosplay
cosplay is neat, though at cons it's something of a bitter reminder that the other 99% of the time most people don’t give a shit about what they’re wearing. i’ve always been an advocate of putting more effort into outfits in daily life, or companies making more elaborate, fun uniforms for customer-facing jobs like they do at Disneyland, but oh well. the unusual thing about cosplay is that it’s basically a fusion of two disparate activities, there’s the craftsmanship aspect of putting together the costume, and then a kind of “performance” aspect wearing it around the convention and posing in pictures and stuff. i hear there’s big controversies over cosplayers who buy their costumes premade from aliexpress or whatever, but i don’t really hold it against them, they’re just more interested in the performance aspect, in movies it’s not like actors are expected to make their own costumes. maybe this is a terminology issue, there’s not really a commonly-used term that specifically refers to cosplay without the costume-making aspect... anyways this is just a long way of saying that while i’ll be totally willing to wear a cosplay, i just don’t really have any interest in the dirty work of making one and i don’t know anyone who would make one for me, so i don’t partake.

but you know i have to admit, sometimes i relish the cringe and the tastelessness, it’s fun to go around with an air of haughty disgust, continuously proclaiming “this is sickening” or “if i have to put up with any more of this i am going to shoot myself”. i used to pretend sometimes that i was an anthropologist sent to study a primitive tribe engaging in disgusting behavior for no discernable reason. one of these days maybe i’ll put together a full safaricore outfit with a pith helmet and spectacles and everything. and last year, i think i discovered the secret to enjoying cons, as documented in the following journal entry...
